Mirantis Raises $10 Million for OpenStack Services

When it comes to building out servers to deploy an OpenStack cloud, services are key. That's where privately-held systems integrator Mirantis comes into play. Mirantis has been helping some of the biggest (and smallest) names in IT, including Dell and Cisco, build and deploy OpenStack clouds.

Mirantis today announced that it has raised $10 million in funding from a trio of investors including Dell Ventures, Intel Capital and WestSummit Capital.

Boris Renski, co-founder and executive VP of Mirantis, told ServerWatch that his company has grown into one of the largest OpenStack systems integrators and has seen a lot of interest.

While the money will be useful to help Mirantis grow as a company, Renski stressed that the strategic alliance piece that comes from the new backers is even more important. He noted that by aligning with the big ecosystem players, new channels of business opportunity can open.

Mirantis is already actively engaged with Dell, helping them to build out a public OpenStack OpenStack - Roundedcloud.

"We are now formalizing our relationship with Dell such that effectively we will be the primary Dell OpenStack implementation arm," Renski said. "We're going next week to help educate their cloud salesforce in how to sell some of the offerings and solutions that we have, so we'll have a formal channel relationship in place."

Mirantis also played a pivotal role in helping Cisco build out an OpenStack cloud for the WebEx collaboration service.

"We continue to work with Cisco going forward," Renski said. "We are also a pursuing channel-like relationship with them as well, though the discussions are still in the early stages."

Exit Strategy

Though Mirantis as a company is growing fast and now raising money, the company does not have an exit strategy, according to Renski. He said that the company's philosophy is to not think about the exit strategy but rather to build a big successful company.

"Whether we have an IPO or an acquisition is irrelevant," Renski said. "We have been approached by various entities about being acquired, which we have turned down."

The focus for Mirantis remains OpenStack services, as that is where Renski sees the greatest value moving forward as opposed to some kind of product-based approach.

"The long-term strategy is to remain very services focused," Renski said. "As far as the exit strategy is concerned, we just work hard and we will build a great business, and then we'll see where it takes us."
