While Moore's Law has been under pressure for years, Intel continues to push out increasingly advanced chips with ever more performance. This week Intel took the wraps off its new Xeon E7-8894 v4 processor, providing a new top-end chip and breaking a number of performance records in the process.

Intel first debuted the 14-nanometer-based Xeon E7-8800 processor family in June 2016 Intel Xeon E7-8894 v4and is now expanding it with increased performance.

"Intel continues to push innovation and process improvements with the Intel Xeon processor E7-8894 v4, which has captured several record-breaking results based on key performance benchmarks, including SAP SD 2-Tier, SPECjbb*2015, SPECcpu2006, LINPACK and SAP BW edition on SAP HANA," Intel stated.

With the new E7-8894 v4, up to 32 sockets can be connected via a node controller, which enables configurations that can have up to 24 processor cores. The processor base frequency is clocked at 2.40 GHz and can burst up to 3.40 GHz with turbo frequency.

The chip also integrates a 60 MB cache as part of its 165W power envelope. Additionally, the chip can support up to 24 TB of memory in an 8-socket system, which is being positioned by Intel for the in-memory analytics market.

Intel is also positioning the high-end chip for scale-up workloads, including online transaction processing and large databases.

All that power doesn't come cheaply, though, as Intel currently has then E7-8894 V4 listed online with a recommended customer price of $8,898.
