HP M300 Moonshot Servers Get Next-Generation Intel Atom Chips
HP Moonshot servers will soon be receiving a speed boost to go along with improved power efficiency, courtesy of Intel's latest Atom systems-on-a-chip (SoC).
On the same day Intel unveiled its new C2000 "Avoton" chips, which are based on the new "Silvermont" microarchitecture, Hewlett-Packard announced its M300 Moonshot server systems will be powered by the C2000 chips.
Previous Moonshot server modules ran on Intel's S1200 "Centerton" Atom SoC, and the new Intel C2000 chips are expected to offer as much as seven times the performance and six times the power efficiency of the Centerton SoCs, making them an ideal fit for the new round of ultra-low-power Project Moonshot servers while also extending the range of capabilities the servers can handle.
Where the previous Moonshot modules were adept at handling such tasks as static Web serving, the performance boost will enable the new M300 servers to also handle heavier workloads like memory caching, a wider range of Web hosting and interactive Web content, according to John Gromala, senior director of hyperscale product management at HP.
"There is a big improvement in horsepower available in the two [Moonshot] designs," Gromala said.
