Dell acquired thin client vendor Wyse Technology back in 2012, and the company has been expanding the platform for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) ever since.

On July 6, Dell EMC announced the latest iteration of its VDI platforms, including the Dell EMC XC Xpress for DellEMCVDI appliance, Latitude 3480 mobile thin client, ThinOS 8.4 operating system and the new Wyse Management Suite software.

"Organizations today are looking for ease and flexibility in their IT solutions, and desktop virtualization is no exception," Steve Lalla, SVP and General Manager of Commercial Client Software & Solutions at Dell, said in a statement.

"The broad range of solutions that we have announced today – spanning an optimized hyper-converged appliance, mobile thin client, and enhanced endpoint software and management – make it more accessible for a broader range of organizations to more efficiently deploy and manage end-to-end desktop virtualization environments, while ensuring data remains safe and secure," Lalla continued.

Dell's New Hyper-Converged Appliance for VDI Workloads

The Dell EMC XC Xpress is defined by the company as a 'hyper-converged' appliance for VDI workloads. The XC Xpress is a server rack-installed system combining compute, storage, virtualization and cloud backup capabilities.

The Dell Latitude 3480 in contrast is a mobile thin client that uses the same form factors as Dell's consumer Latitude notebook computers. The system has a 14-inch display and is powered with a dual-core Intel processing and 8GB of DDR4 memory. Dell is enabling VDI for the Latitude with several different virtual desktop brokers, including VMware Horizon, Citrix XenDesktop and Microsoft RDS.

Powering the thin client is Dell's ThinOS 8.4 update, which now supports the latest Citrix HDX RealTime optimizations. ThinOS 8.4 also supports VMware's Blast Extreme remote connection protocol, which offers users the promise of improved graphical performance.

Wyse Management Suite Launches to Manage VDI Deployments

From a management perspective, Dell is debuting the Wyse Management Suite as a tool to help manage VDI deployments.

"With installation taking place in under five minutes, it is fast and easy for administrators to deploy and manage a fleet of thin clients without the complexity typically associated with thin client management," Dell stated.
