Cool Tools: Second Copy
November 13, 2000
If you're consulting with small businesses, you probably have noticed that the users like to keep their information at their desktops. You have tried to tell them that it would be wiser to place all their files on a central server, but because they feel like they have "no control" over stuff that get placed on a central server, they refuse to keep their files there.
What is the poor network consultant or small business administrator supposed to do? You could write a script that would run at start-up which would cause all the user documents to be copied over to a file server. The limitation of such an approach is that the script would run only at start-up.
If you find yourself in this situation, then Second Copy can come to your rescue! Second Copy is a automated backup program that will copy the files and folders you configure to a network server, all without the intervention of the user, or even you, after Second Copy has been configured.
The latest version of the program Second Copy 2000, uses wizards to help you schedule the backups. Click HERE screen shot of the main program window.
The Second Copy Profile wizard will walk you through the steps of creating a profile which will include: Which files are to be copied, Where are the files to be copied, When are the files to be copied, How should Second Copy approach the copy (e.g., simple copy, exact copy, move, compress, exact compress or synchronize). There are even advanced properties that let you run Second Copy only with certain hardware profiles, and how to approach special files such as hidden, system, and files that are in use.
