ES7000/one Delivers Unified Ecosystem
Unisys' ES7000 server line getting another refresh. On Tuesday, the OEM announced changes to its server ecosystem and the support programs that surround them.Unisys' latest offering, the ES7000/one enterprise server, aims to up the ante on both standardized ecosystems and real-time capacity offerings.

For starters, the ES7000/one stands apart from previous Unisys servers and those of other OEMs because it enables user to cluster together a server ecosystem that uses both Xeon MP and Itanium 2 processors. This, the vendor claims, will enable customers to scale back on training, maintenance, and management requirements, thus reducing total cost of ownership.
The server is available in Xeon and Itanium flavors. The ES7000/one runs Windows and Linux (Red Hat and Novell SUSE). It can scale from 4 to and 32 processors, and support 32- and 64-bit processing.
"The fewer technologies on the [data center] floor, the more agile they can be," Mark Feverston, vice president, Enterprise Solutions Business, told ServerWatch. Unisys, he added, is simplifying this to facilitate such agility.
Enterprises can stack the 3U servers in 4-socket increments, creating up to a 32-socket single image, Feverston said. If a dual-core processor is used, this translates into 64 cores.
A byproduct of the ES7000/one are enhancements it brings to Unisys' ES7000 Real-Time Capacity solution.
Like with previous ES7000 offerings, customers can purchase servers populated with active and inactive processors. The infrastructure of the ES7000/one, however, allows customers to activate processors on a more granular basis. They can use the active processors at any time, and activate the inactive processors through an electronic key. In the past, processing power was activated at the data layer. Now it can be turned on at the application layer, Feverston said.
Unisys also added a new support option to mix. The SafeGaurd Duplex will play baby brother to the SafeGuard 30m.
SafeGuard 30m provides automated application failover and guarantees recovery to operations in 30 minutes or less. It can access data from a backup site anywhere in the world. It is Unisys' high-end support offering
SafeGuard Duplex, in contrast, Feverston explained, merely replicates critical data to a backup site. It is compatible with a wide range of operating systems, including HP-UX, Solaris, AIX, Linux, and Windows, as well as storage systems from HP, IBM, EMC, and Hitachi. It is aimed at enterprises that require only replication. It is fully upgradable to SafeGaurd 3m.
In both cases, data is housed at the customer, hosting provider, or colocation sites. Unisys supplies the appliances to maintain the pipeline and is available for capacity and planning consultations.
