The Apache Software Foundation released of the version 1.1b4 of the Xindice native XML database on Monday. This is the fourth release in the series of 1.1 beta releases. Xindice 1.1b4 fixes a number of bugs found in the last beta release. It also offers a variety of new features and enhancements.
Key changes include:
- The addition of a xindice command line tool to the jar distribution and the war distribution
- The removal of an Eclipse user interface plugin
- Support for MetaData for Binary resources
- Implemented close() in Collection, IndexManager
- XML-RPC interface now passes XMLDBException codes as XML-RPC faults

Apache Xindice (pronounced zeen-dee-chay) is a native XML database. It is the continuation of the project once known as dbXML Core. The dbXML source code was donated to the Apache Software Foundation in December of 2001.
According to the ASF, native XML solutions are advantageous because they do not need to be mapped to another data structure: Data is inserted as XML and retrieved as XML. Xindice uses XPath for its query language and XML:DB XUpdate for its update language. An implementation of the XML:DB API for Java development is available, and Xindice is currently accessible from other languages using an available XML-RPC plugin.
Source and binary distributions compiled with JDK 1.3.1 are available on the download page. Comments and suggestions should be sent via the Xindice mailing lists. Bug reports and patches are being accepted via Bugzilla.
Zeus Technology CEO John Paterson described the product as "the first of a new generation of traffic managers designed to add value to applications as well as fulfilling all network load balancing requirements."
According to the vendor, it does so through control, intelligence, security, and resilience. A high level of functionality and availability is also present.
Extensible Traffic Manager features it own advanced TrafficScript control language, N+M scalability, deep content inspection, intelligent Web Services routing, and end-to-end traffic security to translate business logic into traffic management decisions. It is thus able to differentiate services, handle application failures to safeguard service availability, automate complex recovery tasks, and provide richer information with finer-grained control.
The tool also features the same built-in SSL acceleration found in other Zeus offerings.
Zeus Extensible Traffic Manager runs on Linux (x86 and IA64, 2.4 kernel), FreeBSD (version 4), and Solaris (SPARC and x86 versions 8 and 9). Pricing details can be obtained directly from Zeus.

According to Quantum, the SDLT 600 provides one of the lowest cost per gigabyte of any midrange tape drive available today. It effectively addresses the needs of increased demands for storage capacity and higher performance to meet shrinking backup windows, as well as to enable faster data recovery with a compressed capacity of 600 GB and a transfer rate of 72 MB/s (300 GB native, 36 MB/s native).
