Moonlight Systems, a developer of server configuration management software, this week unveiled a downloadable evaluation version of its Moonlight4 product. Moonlight Systems recently unveiled a downloadable evaluation version of its Moonlight4 product. The software performs automated server troubleshooting, configuration management, and distribution.

System administrators and IT managers can download a full-featured copy of Moonlight and use its automated server troubleshooting, configuration management, and software distribution features. The downloadable product can be used on Solaris and Linux servers to speed problem resolution, streamline configuration management, accelerate software deployment, and lower operational costs in a scalable, secure environment.

Moonlight4 is a repository-driven system that uses templates, models, and rules to detect problems, identify discrepancies, and make repairs to server configurations. The system performs fine-grained audits of server configurations and provides near-real-time alerts when anomalies are detected. The audit trails are stored in a centralized relational database for later correlation and analysis. The system also stores all the binary files needed to restore a system to normal operation, and can automaticly distribute software over the network in real time.

For troubleshooting, Moonlight offers a variety of forensic data. Despite the amount of data that Moonlight provides, it guards against false positives and information overload.

Moonlight4 also fixes affected servers speedily. Moonlight can return large server farms to normal operation quickly because the system adapts the "general case" fix with the per-server customizations required for network operation.

Finally, Moonlight's security model is designed to ensure that administrators can see and do only those tasks for which they are authorized. Moonlight's security model can be set up to be unobtrusive in small organizations or to enforce best practices in larger IT operations.

A downloadable evaluation version of Moonlight4 is available at the company's Web site. It comes with full feature set and e-mail support provided without charge for 30 days. Moonlight4 for Solaris, HP-UX, RedHat Linux, and other platforms is planned for general release in the first quarter of 2003.
