SWsoft this week released version 2.5 of its hosting automation and enterprise server software, Virtuozzo. SWsoft this week released version 2.5 of its hosting automation and enterprise server software, Virtuozzo. The Intel-certified server virtualization software is used for enterprise server consolidation, software development systems, and high security and high availability environments.

The Intel-certified server virtualization software is used for enterprise server consolidation, software development systems, and high security and high availability environments.

It runs on any Intel Xeon processor based server.

Features new to version 2.5 include:

  • Improved 'smart migration' of virtual environments (drag and drop) between physical servers that require only a few seconds of planned system downtime
  • OS template support for Linux (Red Hat 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, SuSE, and Debian) and FreeBSD
  • Two-level disk quotas that enable the sys admin to manage disk quotas for each virtual environment and set up quotas per user within the virtual environment
  • Improved journaling file system support (ext3 and ReiserFS) in addition to ext2
  • An open and well-documented XML-based API in VzAgent
  • Virtuozzo differs from other virtual servers on the market because of the way in which it partitions, SWsoft spokesperson Alex Plant told ServerWatch. The virtualization software offers up to 2,500 separate partitions per server. Each partition has the capability of a stand-alone server while being able to draw from other partitions.

The one major limitation to Virtuozzo's partitioning is that it does not allow multiple operating systems to sit on the same machine.

According to the vendor, tests run by SWsoft revealed Virtuozzo 2.5 to have the highest scalability of any x86 server virtualization solution available, supporting up to 64 GB of RAM and 16 CPUs per virtual environment (the logical partitioning that functions as a stand-alone server) as well as support for the Intel's HyperThreading Technology.

SWsoft ran tests of Virtuozzo 2.5 on IBM and Dell hardware. During 24/7 on IBM and Dell hardware, Virtuozzo proved it possible to run 2,500 virtual environments on a single server, for which it is now claiming the title of most efficient technology in its class.

Virtuozzo is marketed to hosting providers and enterprises. Plant told told ServerWatch that 50 hosting providers are currently using Virtuozzo.

Virtuozzo is used with hosting providers as the core technology behind the HSPcomplete solution. "VZMC, Virtuozzo's multiplatform graphical management console, comes with hundreds of new features," noted Craig Oda, VP, business development, SWsoft.

New features of VZMC include firewall management support, a GUI for mass provisioning of applications and operating systems, and graphical performance monitoring of each partition or virtual environment.

SWsoft is selling Virtuozzo 2.5 through its VPS Enrollment Program. Under the terms of the promotion, enterprises can purchase two Virtuozzo servers for $3,000.
