CrossOver Office Server Edition 1.2, Now in Beta
CodeWeavers, a Windows-to-Linux software developer, announced the beta release of its CrossOver Office Server Edition Version 1.2. According to the company, Server Edition lets users operate Windows software including Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Lotus Notes, Quicken, and Visio in distributed thin client environments for both Solaris and Linux.
CrossOver Office Server Edition 1.2 supports the same core applications as CrossOver Office 1.2, including core office-automation packages such as Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Internet Explorer. It also supports Lotus Notes, Intuit's Quicken, and Visio 2000, Microsoft's business and technical diagramming application. Support for additional client environments, like HP- UX, Apple, and SGI, is planned for future releases. CodeWeavers announced the beta release of its CrossOver Office Server Edition Version 1.2. According to the company, Solaris and Linux Thin Clients may run Windows applications.
"With CrossOver Office Server Edition, we are extending our core marketplace into areas like engineering and CAD/CAM environments, many of whom are running Solaris," said Jeremy White, founder and president of CodeWeavers. "These organizations have a strong need for Windows software running over a thin client. With Server Edition, these workgroups will have a powerful incentive to standardize their desktops on a single Unix environment, rather than having both a Unix and a Windows system on each user's desk. This saves corporations significant system support and capital acquisition costs."
Another aspect that White says will make Server Edition an attractive proposition for larger sites is its affordability and ease of administration. "With Server Edition, we're offering a very robust thin-client environment for a very affordable price. Whereas Citrix and Microsoft Terminal Server licenses typically cost hundreds of dollars per user, we can provide outstanding productivity for much less," says White. "Not only that, but we have a much simpler approach to licensing, one in which system administrators don't have to spend undue time ironing out licensing issues."
CrossOver Office Server Edition 1.2 is priced at $4,895 for a 100 concurrent user license. Additional 100 users cost $2,995. Unlimited enterprise site licenses are available. Customers can sign up for the beta program at CodeWeavers' website, www.codeweavers.com.
