HP, VMware Partner to Virtualize ProLiant Servers
Hewlett-Packard and VMware Wednesday revealed they had partnered to integrate VMware's virtual machine technology into HP's ProLiant servers with the intention of simplifying the deployment and management of enterprise data centers.
Together, the two companies will provide a solution to address the demand for industry standard server consolidation to reduce the need for continuous server management and maintenance on underused servers.Hewlett-Packard and VMware Wednesday revealed they had partnered to integrate VMware's virtual machine technology into HP's ProLiant servers with the intention of simplifying the deployment and management of enterprise data centers.
The agreement lays the groundwork for HP and VMware to jointly market and develop activities for products, services, and technologies designed to simplify how HP customers configure, deploy, manage, and support ProLiant servers in consolidated environments.
HP ProLiant servers (starting with the HP ProLiant DL760 server) will run VMware's virtual machine technology to allow the consolidation of heterogeneous versions of Windows and Linux operating systems on a single server.
VMware will take care of testing HP ProLiant servers to ensure their compatibility for use with VMware software.
The vendors believe that by running services and applications on virtual machines instead of on dedicated hardware, enterprises can maximize their computing resources by consolidating their hardware footprint, thus saving money in operational expenses and capital costs and, ultimately, reducing the total cost of ownership of enterprise data centers.
"With VMware software, HP is adding virtual machine capabilities to complement our HP ProLiant Essentials Workload Management Pack and addressing the growing industry trend toward server consolidation," said James Mouton, vice president enterprise servers, HP Industry Standard Servers.
"Working with HP enables VMware to drive virtual machine technology into the enterprise on products that have a tried and true reputation for performance and reliability," Diane Greene, president and chief executive officer of VMware added.
The HP ProLiant Essentials Workload Management Pack allows enterprises to run multiple applications on top of a single instance of the operating system. With VMware software, HP ProLiant servers can run different operating systems within partitions by enabling multiple copies of the operating system to run at the same time, thus allowing additional flexibility when consolidating business applications.
