Compaq plans to extend the performance capabilities in its 2P ProLiant ML530 G2 server by integrating the Xeon processors with enhanced I/O technology and new Advanced Memory Protection capabilities.Today's big announcement from Intel brought with it a host of vendors unveiling road maps of their plans for the new Xeon chip. Compaq, Unisys, IBM, and Egenera were among the players that announced Monday they will be incorporating Xeon into their products in the next few months. Compaq
Compaq will initially offer the Xeon in its next-generation 2P ProLiant ML530 G2 server as well as in future generations of ProLiant 300 Series dual-processor servers. The ProLiant ML530 G2 is designed with balanced system architecture to maximize application performance and user workload through optimized processor, I/O, and memory technologies. With the improvements, Compaq expects enterprises will be able to add more users or applications per server while significantly increasing system performance.
As part of the Compaq Advanced Memory Architecture, the ProLiant ML530 G2 will be the first server to offer Compaq Advanced Memory Protection, which is designed to provide greater fault resilience from memory failure. When combined, Compaq believes these new technologies will enable workload capabilities to be expanded 40 percent to 60 percent over current 2P server solutions.Unisys
Unisys unveiled its e-@ction Enterprise Server ES7000 with 32 Intel Xeon processors MP. Slated for official release later in the first half of this year as part of the Unisys ES7000 family of servers, the vendor believes the product will be the only 32-way IA-32 server in the industry.
The ES7000 will also feature the server technology innovations provided in forthcoming Xeon processors, including the Intel NetBurst micro-architecture and Hyper-Threading technology to support large server workloads.IBM
IBM will use IBM eServer technology to test applications for the Xeon. More than 80 independent software vendors will be involved in testing the eServer x360, which combines the IA-32 Intel Xeon Processor MP with IBM''s Enterprise X-Architecture technology.
As part of the keynote address at the Intel Developers Forum, IBM also showcased a multitier e-commerce demonstration that featured for a "McKinley" IA-64 IBM eServer along side the new IBM eServer xSeries 360. The systems both consisted of IBM Enterprise X-Architecture mainframe-inspired technology, and Big Blue believes they will lead to dramatic increases in performance and scalability in industry standard servers based on Intel''s upcoming IA-32 Xeon processor MP and its next-generation IA-64 "McKinley" Itanium processor. The systems will run a pre-release version of Windows.Net and include IBM DB2 database software and IBM WebSphere infrastructure software.Egenera
In the blade server space, Egenera announced it would bring Xeon to its BladeFrame system and Processing Area Network (PAN) architecture.
"The Intel Xeon processor 2.20 GHz brings blazing yet cost-effective performance to our two-way Processing Blade, enabling users to deploy a wider variety of applications on the BladeFrame. Moreover, customers can mix and match Processing Blade configurations on a single system, further enhancing the value and flexibility of the Egenera platform," said Susan Davis, vice president of product marketing and management at Egenera.
Egenera offers three Intel-based, two-way SMP Processing Blade configurations. The Xeon processor will come with 512K L2 cache with 6 GB ECC DDR memory.
