Rounding out its iPlanet portfolio, iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance, yesterday launched the iPlanet Messaging Server and iPlanet Web Server software, with support for Red Hat Linux.

These latest additions, introduced at LinuxWorld, join the iPlanet directory server and iPlanet administrator software rolled out in previous months. The scalability and low cost of iPlanet server products, combined with the Linux operating system, affords clients the resources to grow their Internet service provider (ISP) businesses or roll out services to enterprise users. Rounding out its iPlanet portfolio, iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance, yesterday launched the iPlanet Messaging Server and iPlanet Web Server software, with support for Red Hat Linux.

iPlanet server software for Red Hat (RHAT) Linux provides enterprise customers and ISPs with scalability, reliability and the open standards support of Linux. iPlanet's goal is to offer customers strategies for deploying core Internet services, allowing IT teams to focus on developing applications rather than management of basic services, like e-mail, directory and Web.

"The scalable, carrier-grade iPlanet directory, messaging and Web server software naturally complements the Red Hat platform and offers customers out-of-the-box solutions for deploying Internet services for their business," said Paul McNamara, general manager of the enterprise business unit at Red Hat.

The Linux release, which carries the same set of features as other platforms available on iPlanet, further supports iPlanet's cross-platform capabilities. This enables customers to use more than one platform type for different functions.

According to market research firm International Data Corp., Linux is the fastest growing operating system for servers. IDC projects that commercial shipments of Linux will grow at a compound annual rate of 25 percent from 1999 through 2003, with other server operating systems growing at about 12 percent during the same time span.

The entire iPlanet portfolio is available for download and evaluation from the iPlanet Web site. The iPlanet Directory Server is priced at $2.50 per user; iPlanet Messenger Server pricing starts at $3 per mailbox and includes a restricted directory license, with pricing based on the number of mailboxes and server configurations. iPlanet Web server software is priced at $1,495 per CPU.

iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions is part of the Sun-Netscape Alliance, established by America Online (AOL) and Sun Microsystems (SUNW).
