The Sun-Netscape Alliance yesterday announced the prerelease availability of iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition 4.1 and the future release of FastTrack Edition 4.1.

Both products feature support for the Linux operating system and native support for the latest version of Java (across all available platforms). FastTrack Edition 4.1 is a modified version of the iPlanet Server specifically designed to meet the needs of Web developers. It will be available for free beginning in May.

The Sun-Netscape Alliance yesterday announced the prerelease availability of iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition 4.1 and the future release of FastTrack Edition 4.1.

iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition's support for Linux is in response to customer demands for Linux compatibility and to illustrates the Alliance's commitment to continue offering multiplatform support, Rebecca Hansen, a spokesperson for the Sun-Netscape Alliance said.

FastTrack Edition was originally a companion to Netscape Enterprise Server; however, the product had not been updated in more than two years. FastTrack Edition 4.1 has been revised so that it is now targeted toward Web developers. FastTrack Edition 4.1 will contain nearly all the core application, development, and administrative features of Enterprise Edition 4.1 that developers need to build rich, dynamic Web applications. What it will lack, according to Hansen, is some of the scalability and robustness of the full-featured iPlanet Web Server.

The 4.1 release builds on the more radically modified version 4.0 of iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition, released last September. Version 4.0 was the first to carry the iPlanet name. Prior to that, the server was known as Netscape Enterprise Server. Key in version 4.0 was integrated support for Java that runs in the core processor of the Web server (which removed latency issues). Also key in version 4.0 were improvements in reliability, availability and manageability.

A prerelease version of iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition 4.1 software for Linux is currently available on the iPlanet Web site for trial use and feedback.

iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition 4.1 software for Linux, NT and Solaris is scheduled to be available for purchase in early March. A version of the software with support for HPUX, AIX and Tru64 is scheduled to be available in early April. iPlanet Web Server, FastTrack Edition 4.1 software, which will support all of these platforms, is scheduled to be available for download for free on the iPlanet Web site in early May.

iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition 4.1 will be priced the same as version 4.0, $1,495 per CPU.
