Binary Evolution announced today that the Sun-Netscape Alliance is now bundling its iPlanet Web Server with Binary Evolution's VelociGen product. VelociGen is a web server plug-in that is designed to speed the performance of CGI applications by pre-compiling and caching server side scripts and applications.

Many CGI implementations, such as Perl's, have a significant load impact on Web server performance because they require the launch of an interpreter (such as the Perl binary) and compilation of the script (such as formmail.pl) at the time of the CGI request. By pre-compiling scripts, VelociGen aims to cut down on the impact of running standard CGI scripts.

Reducing the server load of such existing CGI applications may be a major boon for many Web sites. Though there are countless speedy proprietary solutions out there, VelociGen's product is designed to work with existing sites and scripts, requiring no modification of existing CGIs. Binary Evolution claims that VelociGen outperforms mod_perl/Apache -- mod_perl is a product similar to VelociGen, designed for Apache -- server setups by 25%. More information, including documentation on Binary Evolution's testing methods is available on their Web site.
