The Aberdeen Group has released a White Paper concerning a new, integrated security solution that is emerging from the combination of existing component technologies. Internet Guardians - consisting of anti-virus, applet containment, e-mail filtering, URL filtering, content inspection, authentication, authorization, network privacy, auditing, and reporting - can be deployed for simultaneously shielding the enterprise from external threat, and enabling IS to reach new markets using popular e-mail and Web platforms. The Paper, entitled "The New Internet Guardians: Integrated Coverage, Better ROI", is available here. Users must register with Aberdeen Group to access the free report.

The paper provides Information Systems (IS) decision-makers with insight into the new Internet Guardians and the suppliers involved in the changing technology. It demonstrates that not only can Internet Guardians provide more comprehensive, integrated coverage, but that these emerging security solutions can provide better return on investment (ROI) than traditionally funded component security solutions. A summary of the paper follows:

Information Systems buyers are finding it increasingly more difficult to stay on top of technology change. Not only is the rate of new technology change more rapid, but acquisitions and mergers among technology suppliers are making it difficult for IS buyers to effectively execute medium and long-term plans. But, when new technology enables IS decision-makers to reduce the number of component suppliers that must be managed, and at lower cost, long established market buying patterns are usually changed - forever. The new Internet Guardians are now ushering in such a change.

IS managers are irked by the cost of maintaining security solutions across dispersed computing systems, including networked routers, user PCs, e-mail servers, Web application servers, and firewalls, among others. Plagued by increasing rates of viral infections, deluges of junk mail, and worse, IS decision-makers often question whether spending on security is above, below, or at industry norms. And, these same executives wonder if more integrated, easier-to-deploy, less costly, and simpler-to-manage security solutions are available.
